DASH Ceredigion – supporting families with disabled children

If you live in Ceredigion and have a disabled child, you could get some extra support for your family from DASH. DASH are a local organisation created by parents, for parents, who offer a wide range of support and activities for all ages. The aim of the scheme is to enhance the quality of life of children and young people living with a disability, and their siblings. That includes everything from helping children to access their local community and join leisure activities to offering day trips and short breaks for the family.
The initiative not only gives families an opportunity to make mutually supportive connections with others in similar circumstances but also gives children and young people the chance to have fun, make friends and learn valuable life skills.
To find out more about DASH activity days, playschemes and youth groups that might be available to you, visit the DASH Ceredigion website or check out their latest news and activities on the DASH Facebook page.

‘Purrr-fect’ pet project provides dementia support

Carmarthenshire Therapy Dogs, a charity that works in partnership with Alzheimers to provide dog therapy across the county is providing support to people with dementia through their ‘petbot cat project’. The 15 robotic pet cats are available to those with dementia who live independently at home and would benefit from the love and companionship of a pet without the responsibility. The battery operated life-like ‘petbots’ have synthetic, soft brushable fur, cat-like movements, sound and built in sensors to respond to motion and touch making them a great alternative to the real thing. It is hoped that the scheme will benefit people with dementia by improving things like; communication, limb mobility, happiness and engagement as well as reducing anxiety and agitation. Find out more about the scheme and contact Carmarthenshire Therapy Dogs through their Facebook page here.

Connect with the community at charity centre

A new purpose-built facility in Kidwelly is to be the base for the ‘John Burns Foundation’ – the in-house charity established by successful pet nutrition company ‘Burns Pet Food’. The charity delivers grassroots projects in the local community as well as nationwide charity campaigns. The accessible centre that is now home to the charity also has rooms available for hire which could help provide a space for local community groups and services. A NEW chair-based Zumba class (perfect for those with mobility issues) is one such group benefiting from the space for their weekly classes. Following National Lottery funding received at the start of the year the charity is also hoping to establish a ‘Food for thought’ project at the centre. This will include a newly constructed (and fully accessible) educational food preparation kitchen. The scheme will aim to teach people how to prepare healthy meals and discover the benefits of cooking from scratch using healthy seasonal produce. To find out more about the centre and what’s going on visit the Canolfan John Burns Centre Facebook page here.
