‘Purrr-fect’ pet project provides dementia support

Carmarthenshire Therapy Dogs, a charity that works in partnership with Alzheimers to provide dog therapy across the county is providing support to people with dementia through their ‘petbot cat project’.

The 15 robotic pet cats are available to those with dementia who live independently at home and would benefit from the love and companionship of a pet without the responsibility. The battery operated life-like ‘petbots’ have synthetic, soft brushable fur, cat-like movements, sound and built in sensors to respond to motion and touch making them a great alternative to the real thing. It is hoped that the scheme will benefit people with dementia by improving things like; communication, limb mobility, happiness and engagement as well as reducing anxiety and agitation.

Find out more about the scheme and contact Carmarthenshire Therapy Dogs through their Facebook page.
