Carmarthenshire theatres reveal virtual programme of events

Carmarthenshire Theatres are presenting a programme of live streamed and pre-recorded shows at their venues throughout this Autumn and Winter.

The Lyric (Carmarthen), The Ffwrnes (Llanelli) and The Miners (Ammanford) Theatres, owned by Carmarthenshire county council, will be streaming shows from their venues with the option for audiences to donate what they can. With the help of Arts Council Wales, the venues are offering a programme of virtual events for audiences across Wales and the UK to enjoy. Live music, plays, audio dramas, children’s theatre and even an art exhibition will be available to view across several online platforms as well as offline for those without internet access.

Live at the Ffwrnes season, will present a series of live music gigs, pre recorded at the venue in Llanelli before being streamed on Youtube. These include Llanelli based soul band, Gimme Some Lovin, rock ‘n’ roll band, The Wurlitzers and an up and coming West Wales band, Los Blancos.

This Incredible Life, an original play first performed at the Ffwrnes Theatre back in 2016, has been reimagined for a digital audience and will be streamed live on October 14 at 7pm. It will also be available to watch on-demand until October 28. The play is a warm-hearted comedy about stories and storytelling from the pen of BAFTA-award winning writer, Alan Harris. Carmarthenshire born actress, Sharon Morgan, plays the lead character of Mab in this compelling play which brings together theatre, film, animation and original music to transport audiences into a story that will lift the spirits and warm the heart.

The Oriel Ffwrnes Gallery’s latest art exhibition is moving online too. Step Forward will showcase a collection of photographs from the gallery’s resident artist and curator, award-winning Welsh painter and photographer, Michele Laugharne Perrott. The exhibition captures post lockdown moments of local people and will be launched live on Facebook on October 7.

There will also be the opportunity for theatre lovers to take a backstage tour of the three Carmarthenshire Theatres from the comfort of their home with a series of streamed videos exploring the buildings.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s executive board member responsible for theatres, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said,

“Although our theatres remain closed due to the coronavirus and government guidelines, it hasn’t stopped us from creating a vibrant autumn season of virtual shows for all the family to enjoy. Our season of online productions focuses on local artists with work which has been exclusively commissioned for our audiences and we are grateful to the Arts Council of Wales for funding to help make this happen. We hope as many people as possible will tune in and see some of the fantastic local talent that Carmarthenshire has to offer.”

For those without internet access, copies will be made of selected performances (where copyright allows) and made available to hire from local libraries throughout Carmarthenshire from later this year.

All performances will be available to watch on-demand for a selected period following their initial release. Visit the Theatre Sir Gar website for full details.
