Penparcau Planting Scheme

Ceredigion planting project helps families grow their own food

What started as a quick tidy up of the neglected garden surrounding a North Ceredigion town’s local community centre has blossomed into a thriving local planting scheme. In just a few months, the Penparcau Planting Project has created communal growing spaces for everyone in the community to enjoy.

After transforming the Penparcau hub garden into a peaceful retreat full of fruit, herbs, vegetables and bee friendly flowers, volunteers are now working with the local school, West Wales Housing and residents to grow their own food and improve green spaces.

With a grant from Keep Wales Tidy, project leader Clare Jackson hopes to develop the initiative even further.

“The big aim is to tackle food poverty, teach our children where the food they eat comes from and create a sustainable scheme that we hope will enable around 400 families to grow their own. We’re also hoping to get a greenhouse, make our own compost and start a seed swap scheme in the near future. We’ve such had a great response from volunteers and people donating supplies and it’s been lovely to see the project bringing so much joy to people of all ages in the community.”
