Pembrokeshire FRAME, are delighted to be one of many projects across Wales to receive grant funding which is enabling them to deliver their ‘Bags of Care’ delivery and collection project to vulnerable people within a 5 mile radius of Merlin’s Bridge and Haverfordwest through the Welsh Government’s Voluntary Services Emergency Fund administered by WCVA. Funding for the project has also been donated by The Moondance Foundation and The National Lottery Fund.
This funding is supporting FRAME as they partner with The Green Shed Café to provide 5000 delicious hot meals until 14th October 2020 to vulnerable individuals during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Bags of Community Fridge surplus food are also being provided to anybody in Pembrokeshire who would like to help continue reducing waste until the team are able to safely welcome them back to their Haverfordwest Community Fridge. These bags can be collected on an appointment basis or delivered to those who are struggling to get out.
Professionals, care leads, social workers, community groups and community members can all refer vulnerable individuals to this project. Individuals may also self-refer if they feel they are eligible to receive a Bag of Care. Beneficiaries of the hot meal project will be those most at risk during the Covid 19 pandemic, they do not have to be in receipt of a shielding letter, but they will be experiencing one or more of the following issues:
• The elderly who are isolated and lonely
• Individuals with learning disabilities
• Those on low/no income
• Homeless people/those with serious housing difficulties
To benefit from the project, referrers and self-referrers just need to register by getting in touch with our hotline number on 07581 496534.
Jenny Sims, Director Pembrokeshire FRAME said,
“We’re thrilled to announce we’ve been awarded this funding from Welsh Government’s Voluntary Services Emergency Fund, The National Lottery Fund and The Moondance Foundation to help to support vulnerable individuals within the community, whilst also helping us to continue reducing waste.
We look forward to the day that we can welcome back visitors to the fridge, but in the meantime this project will help us to do all that we can to let people in the community know that they have not been forgotten and that we care”.
The Bags of Care project is also calling all local food businesses in Pembrokeshire to donate surplus food so that we can continue to provide community fridge bags to anybody in Pembrokeshire who wants to help us to reduce waste.
Food waste is a big issue in the UK. The average household throws away £700 worth of food every year and at the same time 4 million people in the UK are living in food poverty. Most food waste in the UK is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed.
