The Window Wonderland project which is being launched this December, encouraging families throughout Pembrokeshire to decorate their windows for Christmas, hopes to bring a positive feeling to the local community.
The festive community event is being launched by the organisers of Pembroke Dock Lantern Parade and supported by the Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services (PAVS) who say,
“As Christmas 2020 approaches us in Pembrokeshire, it has become sadly apparent that many Christmas community activities will not be taking place, due to COVID-19 19.
That’s no Christmas Community Lunches, no Lantern Parades, no Carol Singing, no Father Christmas riding his sleigh through town, no Christmas Markets, no Pantomimes, no chance to come together as communities to welcome and celebrate the festive season.
Christmas is also a time that many people of all ages, can experience loneliness, and this year, it will be particularly difficult for families that may not be able to celebrate together, people who live alone and cannot join other households, people who are carers, single parents, older people, younger people, children and all others who are struggling to cope with the effects of social isolation due to lockdowns and the suspension of ‘normal life’.
After speaking with people involved in organising community events, we came up with the concept of ‘Window Wonderland Pembrokeshire 2020.”
From 1st December organisers are hoping to see as many windows lit up as possible across Pembrokeshire and beyond, suggesting people get involved by painting a festive masterpiece, displaying their Christmas tree or using fairy lights to create a colourful display in their windows. Organisers are also offering bilingual window sticker templates on the Window wonderland Facebook page to print out and colour in to spread the word.
“This is a campaign to encourage people to decorate their windows, to light up their villages, streets and towns. We would like residents to take part in their houses; businesses and offices to join in, public buildings, care homes and shops to get behind it and get creative.
We will also encourage people to take and upload photos, and families to take evening walks and see the light shining across the Shire. It is our aim to bring light to the darkness and reassure people that we will get through this together. No one gets left behind.”
With the enthusiasm and encouragement of the organisers and supporters it looks as though Christmas 2020 really will be special for all Pembrokeshire communities.
