Theatr Gwaun hosts International Women’s Day fundraiser to celebrate county’s talent

Theatr Gwaun hosted their second International Women’s Day fundraising event on Sunday 10th March, with money raised going towards Hafan Cymru and also to help the people of the Ukraine.

Organisers first launched the event in March 2020 and saw tickets selling out, with members from across the Pembrokeshire community supporting the cause. This year tickets sold out just as quickly, which included a free Bucks Fizz and entry to the event which offered a variety of entertainment involving live music from prize winning Bad Habits choir and musicians Emma Leeke and Sequoia, comedy and poetry from Clare Ferguson Walker who also presented the a fashion show displaying several local designer’s work and raffle with proceeds going towards the charities.

The aim of the event was to celebrate the women of Pembrokeshire, by showcasing some remarkable talent, as well as to raise important funds for the Hafan Cymru Womens refuge, and for Theatr Gwaun itself, which is run principally by volunteers and also to support victims of the current crisis in Ukraine.

All of the people involved, from the live acts to the stage crew and theatre staff, offered their services and skills for free to support the event, which was organised by Blanche-Rose Giacci.

Blanche spent much of the year organising the event and she told Pembrokeshire Online of the importance of recognising talented women and the inspiration that the county brings.

“Known for its beautiful countryside, beaches and breath-taking coastal views Pembrokeshire inspires local musicians and artists. A special thanks to the talented Eliza Bradbury, age 14, in year 10 at Haverfordwest High. Eliza plays harp and recently passed ABRSM grade 8, with distinction. We are delighted to welcome her to play in our foyer on your arrival.

We showcase local musician and piano teacher Emma Leeke and singer Sequoia. The celebrated poet, comedienne, singer and artist Clare Ferguson-Walker is our fabulous presenter. The wonderful voices of Bad Habits choir are a tribute to the talent of the women of Pembrokeshire. This year we give a Theatr Gwaun Women’s International Day Award to Min Walsh, president of Fishguard and Goodwick RFC, who pioneered the introduction of women’s rugby in Fishguard and has empowered young women over the years to gain confidence and self-esteem through sport.”

There was also an exhibition in the foyer area of the theatre, displaying bespoke artwork by Clare CHOC Howell and a wedding dress for the partially sighted created with recycled material by Natalie Badden.

Megan Thomas is one of the many designers who saw her work presented in the fashion show for the second year running. She said,

“It’s such a great event that really empowers women. Both in those that take part and those we raise money for.”

Megan owns NOVI which has been running for 3 years and alongside the other designers, her work focuses on sustainability, demonstrating efforts to participate in the ‘Save the planet’ campaign, a theme key to the International Women’s Day event.

A representative spoke on behalf of the women’s refuge, thanking the community for their support and fundraising efforts and raising awareness of the facilities that Hafan Cymru offer to the community. She noted that they now go beyond supporting women in domestic abuse situations, also helping single men, and those with mental health issues. They also offer housing and employment support providing courses for those who need it.

International Women’s Day is traditionally celebrated on 8th March throughout the world, dedicated to recognising the progress of women, to raise awareness of their issues and to promote gender equality in society. The Mimosa flower is the symbol of International Women’s Day, originating in Italy, where across Europe a spray of Mimosa is given to mark over 100 years of celebrating women in society. In a nice touch to the closing ceremony, participants were given a bouquet of flowers with a spray of mimosa inside.

The event was well received, with over £200 being raised for the charities from the raffle alone. Blanche hopes that there will be another in the pipeline for next year showcasing yet more Pembrokeshire talent and continuing to help such an important cause in the community.
