DIY SOS - Surfability CIC - Adaptable surfing

DIY SOS builds South Wales’ first ever inclusive surfing centre

We wrote about the fantastic work Ben Clifford and team do for people with disabilities and young people through adaptive surfing last year. And so when we heard that DIY SOS were due to transform their existing dilapidated bus shelter/storage facility at Caswell Bay into a fully inclusive surf centre, we couldn’t get the grin off our faces.

As many of you know, when Nick Knowles and his team decide to help a family/community/project in need, they give 110% commitment, and no matter where their team temporarily sets up camp, they attract overwhelming support from local community, whom open their hearts and minds to the challenge in hand.

Exactly this happened to Surfability CIC in September 2020, a non profit organisation founded by Ben Clifford to empower people with disabilities to learn the joy of surfing. And now, following their DIY SOS contribution to build a state of the art surfboard shaped surf centre at one of Gower’s most treasured beauty spots, they are able to welcome more users, who can get changed in modern, clean, adaptable spaces and enjoy the benefits of accessing the stunning South Wales coast.

Ben and team are also working on some groundbreaking societal changes, including direct work with the International Surfing Association to develop standards in the adaptive version of the sport.
