Bicycle hire service set to launch across Carmarthenshire

Thanks to funding from the Welsh Government’s local transport network, Carmarthenshire County Council will be launching a local bike hire service in the coming weeks, which will see them working with Brompton bike hire, a national company. It is believed to be the first of its kind in Wales.

The foldable bikes will be available to hire from areas around Carmarthenshire, including Llanelli railway station, Carmarthen bus station and Burry Port interchange and can be taken on public transport. Users can hire the bikes either online, or by using a mobile phone and collect them from one of their local docking stations. The cost will be just a few pounds a day, making the project accessible to everyone. Users will be able to explore some of the scenic local areas and get more active by using the bikes.

Once the scheme is set up, Brompton bike hire will manage, operate and maintain it, ensuring that the bikes will be regularly sanitised as part of current guidelines.

Executive board member for environment at Carmarthenshire Council, Hazel Evans commented “We are pleased to be the first county in Wales to make this bike hire available as an alternative means of transport for people.”

Councillor Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, added: “Cycling can be enjoyed by people of all ages, and this scheme provides options for people who may not have a bike of their own but want to enjoy the fantastic scenery Carmarthenshire offers.”

More information will be available when the scheme goes live.
