Amethyst: Supporting Young People in Ceredigion

If you know a young person who needs support in the Ceredigion area, Cardigan’s Small World Theatre’s Amethyst Project is a fantastic resource.

Working with young people and their guardians, Amethyst provides a range of youth services and activities to support mental health. As there are a number of new opportunities happening in 2021, Amethyst are inviting young people and their families to get in touch and get involved.

Although much of their recent service delivery has been online for obvious reasons, face to face support and workshops are an important element of what they do. The project’s aim is to give young people a safe space in which to explore their feelings, express themselves, develop confidence and self-esteem and feel heard. With many young people facing mental health challenges, particularly over the last year or so, the project has become a lifeline for youngsters and their caregivers across West Wales.

Recent Amethyst projects include:

Therapeutic art courses: free, confidential sessions designed to help young people explore and regulate their emotions and improve wellbeing through creativity.

Parent/guardian support group: free sessions offering support to parents or guardians of young people with mental health issues. Covering topics such as substance abuse and self-harm, this is an invaluable resource for anyone experiencing challenges with supporting a young person.

Covid 19 short films: these short films were created by young people working with Amethyst and document the experiences and challenges they faced during the Covid 19 pandemic. It’s hoped the films will be rolled out to youth groups and schools to help others and facilitate discussion.

Now that the world is cautiously opening up again, it’s worth checking out what Amethyst have in store for the future.

If you know a young person who might benefit from contacting Amethyst or you would like more support as a parent or guardian, visit the Amethyst project web page or email deri@smallworld.org.uk.
