Paddle West bring outdoor activities back to Pembroke

With the arrival of Spring, and it being 12 months on from the beginning of a particularly challenging year, Pembrokeshire residents may be keen to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Maybe, even brave some physical activity on the water.

Paddle West are set to launch their castle row boats, against the beautiful backdrop of Pembroke Castle, on the Mill Pond this spring. With restrictions easing in Wales, Paddle West are taking the opportunity to provide people with much needed time in the outdoors, taking in the beautiful local landscapes.

The row boat hire on the Mill Pond is a relatively new project for Paddle West, who base their local business on canoe and kayaking courses, canoe tours on the Cleddau, hiring of equipment and working with young people to encourage confidence and skills in a healthy, outdoor environment.

Boats are suitable for complete novices and can be hired for £10 for half an hour for families, couples or individuals. The Castle Row Boats have proved successful since their launch, providing a fun and engaging family day out, or a relaxing activity for any age. Paddle West have over 293 positive reviews on trip advisor and are number 1 out of 83 tours available in Pembrokeshire.

In terms of their work with youth groups and schools, Paddle West note that access to services such as theirs, and to the outdoor learning may be more important than ever.

“As we return to the ‘New Normal’ it seems likely that more and more young people will struggle to re-engage with their education provision. Our staff have backgrounds in working with young people with additional needs and emotional behavioural difficulties. Get in touch to see how we could put in a programme to help your students.

Outdoor learning and participation in adventurous activities can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s education and development.”

With this in mind, Paddle West are also launching their ‘Saturday Adventure Club’ in April, for children aged 4+. There will be a different adventurous activity every Saturday, including hill walking, kayaking, canoeing, cycling, stand up paddle boarding, archery and bush craft.  The club starts on Saturday 3rd April, and there are two categories. 9-12am will be for children over 8 years and 1.30pm-3pm will be for 4–8-year-olds, called Little Adventurers. The Little Adventurers will follow fun themed activities such as Vikings in canoes and Pirates in row boats. They promise that the clubs will all (be) delivered by their team of experienced guides and instructors in a safe, fun, exciting learning environment.

Artist Dorian Spencer Davies recently created a colourful painting of Pembroke Castle with the row boats at the forefront, which has been put up for raffle with Paddle West, to celebrate their 2021 launch. The winner receives a free row to join with 3 friends.

As a family run business, Paddle West are constantly looking for opportunities to expand. They recently hinted at an exciting collaboration with Dewslake Farm camping and glamping, with more to be revealed soon. They also offer vouchers for their canoe tours as gifts.
