National Botanic Garden welly walks encourage outdoor fun

The National Botanic Garden of Wales in Llanarthne in Carmarthenshire is running weekly Wednesday welly walks for families around their beautiful grounds. The Botanic garden, which is both a visitor attraction and a centre for botanic research and conservation, features the worlds largest single-span glass house measuring 110m long and 60m wide.

The welly walks are on Wednesdays at 11am or 1pm and must be booked in advance as tickets are limited to 10 children per session. It includes an hour of fun outdoor activities including story telling, crafts and exploring for pre-schoolers. The theme changes week to week, with focus on encouraging children to explore and learn in natural surroundings. A recent theme was Goodbye Swallow, featuring character Tedi in a hunt to find Swallow in the woods, discovering other birds on the way. The children then re enacted Swallows migration and made a puppet to take home.

Meeting points and routes are weather dependent and can change on the day.

Welly Wednesday tickets are free, but normal admission to the Botanic gardens applies. Entry is free for under 5s – find more information and book your place here.

The National Botanic Gardens have a number of events coming up for Autumn and Winter, including Doggy Day, a therapeutic gardening course and reducing plastics in the garden courses.
